Alfa Romeo Milano, like a feeling of deja vu

Alfa Romeo Milano, like a feeling of deja vu

It is difficult to create a unique car from a fixed technical base. Alfa, however, rose to the challenge.

For six years, and the end of the sale of the lovely MiTo, Alfa Romeo had not entered the hard drive segment. The much-hyped return of the Milano mini SUV, but is the historic emblem enough to give the car its soul?

The Alfa Romeo Milano is an interesting version of the Stellantis platform already seen on the Opel Mokka, Fiat 600, Peugeot 2008 and Jeep Avenger. A guarantee of weight and quality, but for a technical novel, go ahead, you’ve already seen it all!

With a length of 4.17 meters, the Milano is a few centimeters longer than the Avenger and the Mokka, the same as the 600 and slightly shorter than the 2008. But it must be noted that the Alfa will be able to distinguish itself with a very special thanks. style. If the front lights have the angry air of Renault, the eye is immediately drawn to the good intake of dark air in the lower part and this exaggerated Alfa mark that takes place in the middle of the grille. This is a bold stylistic choice but ultimately successful thanks to the asymmetry of the symbols. We love it!

The real face of Alpha

We move quickly on the general line already seen on other models of Stellantis to get to the rear. The open break can be shocking, but there is a Giulia in the headlights, a Stelvio in a fast profile and finally a sporty look. In the end, this Milano has a nice face, a nice ass but a naughty style.

We knew that the Milano would be offered in a 100% electric version and we feared that it would inherit the standard battery and charging configuration from Stellantis, with a capacity of 54 kWh and charging up to 100 kW… and unfortunately we were right. 154 hp, 400 kilometers of autonomy announced with deceptive hopes and loads rarely exceed 50 kW, it does not really suit the Italian diva.

Milano Elettrica Veloce which will join the Abarth group. The 600e, fortunately, should save the image of a beauty with 237 hp, a tailor-made chassis, a strong suspension that reduces the ride height by 25 mm, reinforced brakes and 20-inch alloy wheels.

…but in the end it is the creation of Stellantis

Called the Milano Ibrida, the hybrid version inherits a 1.2 liter three-cylinder petrol engine producing 134 hp boosted by a 28 hp electric motor mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox. A standard traction system that allows you to drive in electric mode almost 50% of the time in the city. The sales pitch of Stellantis is well set and very logically this version will guarantee a lot of sales.

Let’s go to the basics and the interior, the last area of freedom for designers. Sculptural bucket seats, ambient lighting, and more than that both digital but round dials, you immediately feel like you’re in an Alfa. Ultimately, you spend more time in your car than the outside defining its lines, and no 2008, Mokka or Avenger offers that.

Adding a partnership with the Jeep Avenger seems logical for Alfa Romeo, as the Milano is built on the same production line in Tychy, Poland. No clue on pricing but you should expect a slight increase compared to its American cousin. Orders will open at the beginning of the summer for the first shipments in the summer. 35,000 euros for hybrid and 40,000 euros for electric? Perhaps unfortunately we have little hope.
