always more space!

always more space!

The Skoda Kodiaq, is the largest SUV from the Czech manufacturer. It was announced in 2016 and launched a year later, more than 860,000 copies around the world. Shortly before releasing the 100% electric version planned for 2026, previously shown by the Škoda Vision 7S concept, the manufacturer is updating its 5- or 7-seater family model in the ultimate high-energy version. On the program, small hybrid gasoline (mHEV), plug-in hybrid, and even diesel! To be precise, it is the 193 hp variant of the 2.0 TDI that we tested at the height of Barcelona. So is diesel still the right choice for such a car? Answer in this essay.

Size: 5 or 7 seat explorer-looking family SUV

Like Renault Espace or the last one Peugeot 5008ce Skoda Kodiaq available in 5 or 7 seats. In terms of dimensions, the Czech SUV gets 6 cm longer compared to its predecessor. It therefore reaches 4.76 m, 1.87 m wide and 1.66 m high. The wheelbase, however, remains unchanged at 2.79 m.
In terms of style, this is not a big shock for this 2nd generation Kodiaq. The front changes slightly and passes more beautiful lights, is still split into two parts when the LED signature is reconstructed. The new optical units are still Matrix LED but absorb 50% more light points and are brighter (+15% efficiency). The large grille includes a thin, opaque strip of LEDs. Finally, the shield has been redesigned and new real air intakes on each side guide the air flowing into the wheel arches. In profile, the Kodiaq retains its adventurous and robust family SUV look with square wheel arches. Rims range from 17 to 20 inches, and use a “full” design on our 20-inch model to improve aerodynamics. Cx also goes out 0.32 to 0.28 on this second generation. To break up its XXL silhouette, designers added a gray pillar to the rear profile of the SUV. A hint that effortlessly energizes the Kodiaq’s design and gives it an unreal coupe SUV look. But the truth is completely different: the stem stops suddenly. The design of the lights on each side of the tailgate has also been modernized, and an opaque strip connects the two optics.

Interior: lots of space… and an XXL trunk!

Inside this new Kodiaq, the changes are obvious. Delivered in exceptional perfection” Selection »at its launch, the presentation is neat: the material is different and foamy for the most part. Genuine eco-leather is in the upholstery, something that is rarely seen these days (even if it is eco-leather). The layout of the dashboard changes: it is more refined and the organization is more balanced. The central screen changes position, now floating and reaching 13 inches as usual. The interface has been modified, inspired by those of the VW group. Good news, shortcuts on the top and bottom bar let you find your way around quickly. Facing the driver, the device is 100% digital with a 10.25-inch screen. Header displays are also included. for the first time on this new Kodiaq. Another novel is the coming of 3 big buttons multifunction on the central console: the dial is very practical because it allows you to adjust several functions of the car with one click. Finally, the gearbox controls now run behind the steering wheel, leaving room in the middle row for plenty of storage space.
Sitting on the first bench, the occupants will be sitting very comfortably. Legroom is great, and headroom is excellent. We can arrange long trips without any problem! Passengers like: dual air conditioning, dual USB Type-C chargers, luggage pockets, deep door bins, mobile phone holder integrated into the headrest, top grab handles, panoramic sunroof, elbow rest, cup holders… the whole package! Practically, the Škoda Kodiaq is practical to the last row: thanks to the first bench sliding 18 cm, you can save space, enough to fit two adults on the second bench! Therefore, rows 6 and 7 are passable, as is Espace for example which does not have room for adults in this area.
Last but not least, the trunk volume. Already a record on the previous generation, this one is still growing by a few liters. In the configuration of 5 seats, the bench pushed forward as much as possible, the Czech SUV has 910 liters. Our 7-seater version is satisfied with it 340 liters, or the average size of a city car. With all the seats folded, the volume increases to more than 2100 liters. It is suitable for considering small steps…

At the wheel: modest and torquey 2.0 TDI

In France, this Skoda Kodiaq will be available with 2 petrol, TSI 1.5 of 150 hp micro hybridized (mHEV), as well as Kodiaq iV plug-in hybrid engine of 204 hp (PHEV). Unfortunately, the other 1.5 TSI version with 204 hp will not be available here in France due to the very high penalty. In diesel, two 2.0 TDIs of 150 and 193 hp will be present. It is this latest version that we are testing with 4-wheel drive. Once launched on the small roads of Catalonia, this block is very easy to use, with very good savings. The torque of 400 Nm helps when starting again, even at high speeds. In addition to the non-textual character and linear inspiration, this block perfectly suits this family SUV. Mated to a well-tuned DSG7 gearbox even if it could be more responsive, the Kodiaq drives itself. In addition, the 2.0 TDI is surprisingly reasonable, at least in this very comfortable and quiet cabin. The Czech SUV has seen improved comfort and character. Its chassis, based on the common MQB Evo platform introduced in 2019 by the Volkswagen Golf 8, has been strengthened but the compromise is better: the Kodiaq does not hold when cornering. Our version, with the DCC+ suspension option, reaches the highest level of comfort. It is perfect for flying on the road and enjoying the ride with complete peace of mind. The last step, use. In the configuration of 7 seats and about 1.9 tons in fully equipped form, the Kodiaq with its 193 hp diesel is economical: only 6.2 l per 100 on the highway and no more than 7 on average along. With a 58 liter tank, you can make very long trips without stopping at the pump.

Verdict: the best family member

Replaced in 2026 by the future Vision 7S, a model that will be 100% electric, this Škoda Kodiaq is the last in its line. This second version seduced us. The family SUV offers high comfort, plenty of space for its occupants and a large trunk. Big families will have fun!
At the wheel, if the feeling is not there, the gentleness and flexibility of the 2.0 TDI in its most powerful version is undoubtedly the best choice to make. Trials of the 150 TSI mHEV and 150 TDI will follow this year. In terms of pricing, our trial version does not yet have prices shown and will be available this summer. Currently, only the prices for the hybrid versions of the TDI 150 and the smaller TSI in five or seven seats are known: €43,970 for the petrol and €48,470 for the diesel. If you are interested, please note that it is already available to order from March 2024.
