What to choose between turbo 4-cylinder and diesel engine and Chevrolet Silverado?

I want to get a truck Silverado and a 3-liter diesel or a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder engine. Used model from 2021 or 2022.

Since this will be for my personal use, it won’t work much. Occasionally, it will be used to pull a 7,000-pound trailer. Which of these two rigs do you recommend?

Is it true that the diesel model is known for its timing belt problems which are expensive to replace?

Hi Serge,

First, a word about the 2.7-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder. If it is effective on paper, it is very disappointing in terms of performance. A smoother and thirstier engine than the comparable V6 offered by Ford, although it does deliver impressive torque at low revs. You will also notice poor usability when pulling as it will always be busy. Personally, this engine disappoints me and would benefit from being replaced with a good V6, which GM unfortunately does not offer.

The 3-litre Duramax diesel therefore includes Chevrolet’s hidden card. Unique, carefree and powerful as a couple, it also stands out for its satisfying performance. Of course, diesel fuel costs more, but consumption is so low that the end is cheaper than choosing a 4-cylinder gasoline.

However, keep in mind that maintenance costs are higher, that (cheaper) urea fluid must be used and that, of course, the timing belt that turns the fuel pump remains a weakness of this engine. A feature that must be checked before buying a truck, regardless of its mileage.

As for the Silverado itself, it’s very solid. Please note, however, that during 2022, the manufacturer redesigned the dashboard of its truck (except the W/T version), making the user experience more pleasant. The quality of finish and presentation has also been improved, while the 2021 models were rightly criticized in this regard.
