Brit Smith’s Unreleased Original Version Of JoJo Siwa’s “Karma” Climbs The Pop Charts

It was originally recorded in 2012.

There aren’t many surprises at the top of the Genius Top Songs chart, as J. Cole, Eminem, and the duo of Future and Metro Boomin occupy three of the Top 5 spots. Sitting at No. 1 is JoJo Siwa, the former Nickelodeon star who made a deliberate move last week with the release of “Karma,” her effort to shed her clean-cut image and make more grown-up music. But one name near the top of the chart is bound to draw some head-scratches: Brit Smith, aka Matisse.

Smith is in the Top 5 for a reason his version of “Karma,” the unreleased 2012 single “Karma Is a Bitch,” it landed on YouTube yesterday. Apparently produced by Rock Mafia—JoJo’s credited producer—along with Timbaland, who appears in the video, Smith’s “Karma Is a Bitch” has similar lyrics and lyrics to Siwa’s viral hit.

So who is Brit Smith? She is a Connecticut-born singer, songwriter, model, and actress who first made her mark as a member of Brit & Alex, a duo she formed with her sister. After the pair split in 2008, Brit signed with Jive Records and called himself Matisse. Under that name, he released the 2010 single “Better Than Her,” featuring Akon, in 2010.

Smith had returned to her given name when she released the Timbaland-produced “Provocative (hiDhi),” in 2013. Somewhere between the two tracks, she appeared to have recorded “Karma’s a Bitch,” though she may not have. has been the intended recipient of the song.

A 2012 tweet and Rock Mafia suggests Miley Cyrus was working on recording “Karma’s a Bitch” in 2012, and many sources have reported that Cyrus deleted the song. Miley’s record hasn’t aired yet, but from all the talk, it might just be a matter of time.
