Fred Vasseur: “Easier when the speed is right” / Formula 1

Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur was pleased with the third and fourth places of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc at Suzuka. There is a simple reason why things are going so well for the Scuderia from Maranello, he explained.

The Ferrari duo have made a strong start to the new season, with Scuderia rookies Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz sitting 3rd and 4th in the championship standings after four races – directly behind championship leader Max Verstappen and team-mate Sergio Perez .

Things are going particularly well for the Spaniard, who missed one of the last four races – because he had to undergo additional surgery – but managed to finish the remaining three doctors on the podium. In Melbourne he even crossed the finish line first.

In the most recent race at Suzuka he finished third. His teammate crossed the finish line directly behind him in 4th place. The Monegasque driver managed this because he was so careful with the tires that he only made one pit stop after the red flag.

The strategy worked and Leclerc was able to advance from 8th on the grid. Fred Vasseur explained what has changed, because in previous years the Reds’ strategists were not always right. The team boss explained: “It’s easier when the pace is right. That also has to do with confidence.”

Everything on the pit wall is now quieter, said the Frenchman. “That is the best place to make the right decisions. Everything is going in the same direction and you are doing well.” If things don’t go well, decision-making becomes more difficult, he knows from experience.
