Dodge Charger, Chrysler 300 Recalled For Airbag Exploding Risk

  • Stellantis is recalling about 285,000 Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 vehicles from the 2018 to 2021 model years.
  • The problem is a faulty air intake system in the cars curtain airbags that can cause the airbags to rupture, sending metal pieces into the cabin.
  • The automaker will notify owners of the recall on May 3 and replace the price boosters free of charge.

Stellantis, in document filed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), has announced the recall of 217,802 Dodge Charger and 67,180 Chrysler 300 sedans, all from the 2018 to 2021 model years. The problem is a faulty side curtain airbag, an issue that is predicted to affect about 1 percent of recalled vehicles.

In the recall report, Stellantis says that the “suspect inflators” were used between July 2018 and May 2021 and were then no longer used in the vehicles, according to production records. The automaker said that its analysis of the issue shows the vehicles “may have had moisture introduced into the radiator during dealer manufacturing that could cause internal corrosion over time and potentially lead to Irritation Cracking of the radiator.”
The issue could cause the airbag to rupture and even send pieces of metal into the cabin, causing injury. Stellantis said that as of February 2024, it is aware of two warranty claims and five customer support records, but no reports of injuries. Recalled vehicles will receive both side airbags instead of new ones using inflators manufactured outside of the recall period, according to NHTSA documents.

Owners will be notified of the recall starting May 3. For now, Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger owners can check NHTSA recalls website to see if their car is affected.
