Jeffrey Buis (KTM): Good luck saved his life / Supersport 300 World Championship

Jeffrey Buis’ crash in the first race of the Supersport 300 World Championship at Assen brought back the worst memories. The fact that the champion from the Freudenberg KTM team escaped with minor injuries is not a miracle.

The crash happened at the end of the second round of the Supersport 300 race last Saturday: Jeffrey Buis was leading the field in front of the home crowd at the TT Circuit in Assen, but hit his rear wheel on the exit. in front of the start-finish straight the curbs were still wet, slipped and was run up by Julio Garcia, who immediately followed.

The Spaniard hit the Dutchman in the back, neck and head, Jeffrey immediately lost consciousness and fell near the track like a doll. Worse memories came flooding back, such as Victor Steeman’s fatal crash in Portimao in 2022.

Buis was taken to hospital in Assen, and on Saturday evening he was back in the paddock and busy signing memorabilia. It can be said without exaggeration: The KTM driver from the Freudenberg team was unimaginably lucky to survive the accident almost unscathed, apart from bruises and a headache.

“After an impact like that, it’s normal for me to feel pain,” Jeffrey told SPEEDWEEK.com. “I was very lucky, I got a concussion and a small scar on my neck from another driver’s tire. After an examination at the Medical Center, they sent me to the hospital for further examination. I’m fine, but they ordered me to rest for a few days. I had to miss the race on Sunday because of the heart attack; It was hard to watch others run from the sofa.”

Buis looked at the video and photos of the crash “It doesn’t look good,” he smiled. “But things like that happen and luckily I’m fine. It was a bad impact, first on the back and then on the neck, bad things can happen. I can’t say more than that I was lucky. It was a stupid mistake on my part, I didn’t see the water on the curbs and I was on light tires.”

The SBK World Championship doesn’t resume until mid-June in Misano, and Buis still has seven weeks to recover by then. “The doctor told me to rest for two weeks, but I think one is enough,” shouted the two-time world champion. “I have to start training again.”
