German, American and Japanese roots!

In 1991, Opel shook up the norms of the automotive industry by presenting an innovative car at the Geneva Motor Show: the Opel Frontera, an “all-wheel drive recreational vehicle”. Here it is back 33 years later, this time in the form of a less adventurous SUV, an opportunity to look back at its various developments over the years.

Its creation was not easy because at that time, Opel did not know how to make 4X4s. It will be thanks to its owner General Motors, which will collaborate with Isuzu, specialized in the segment, that the Isuzu Rodeo (or Trooper) will be rebranded as Opel Frontera. But to make it a car in its own right, we offer Opel engines: two petrol units and a turbo Diesel version.

The First Generation: Germany’s success story

This design is from the 90s!

This car is available in two versions, compact Frontera Sport and long-wheelbase Frontera five-door, quickly found its audience. With all-wheel drive and all-terrain tires, it has conquered the toughest environments while providing some driving comfort in everyday conditions.

It is its durability that has contributed to its reputation, its bodywork is treated to resist rust. But safety features such as a hard roof or barriers have also won over customers. Voted “4×4 of the Year” in Germany in 1991 and 1992, the Opel Frontera quickly dominated the European market, with more than 320,000 units sold.making it the most popular all-terrain vehicle in Europe.

Second Generation: the most complete product in all areas

The design of this second generation shows better complexity

Opel launched its second generation Frontera at the end of 1998, marking a major evolution in terms of comfort, safety and performance. New engines have been proposed, including 115 horsepower 2.2 Diesel and 205 horsepower 3.2 gasoline V6. It is equipped with the “No Stop 4×4” electric system, which allows you to switch between rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, to better adapt to each driving situation.

Various safety features have been improved, such as airbags, seat belts and structural reinforcement for better protection in the event of an accident. In addition, the more rounded design of the car has given it not only a pleasant beauty, but also improved safety.

In 2024, Opel Frontera becomes the most sensible SUV

Opel Frontera: German, American and Japanese roots!

Step away from the muscle cruiser, here’s the new Frontera, which is none other than a cousin of the Citroën C3 Aircross. So forget about any concept of crossing!

However, the 4X4 of the German brand ceased to be produced in 2004, until the first generations can now be registered as collections, that is to say … But this year, 20 years after its disappearance, Opel has decided to delete the name and release the third generation of the best seller. And this time, it proudly shows its SUV status.

But apart from its name, it is difficult to find similarities between this new vintage and the previous generations. The Frontera adopts a more conventional style, reminiscent of its cousins from the Stellantis group, notably the Citroen C3 Aircross. It ditches the petrol engines for a hybrid and 100% electric. Opel has not yet announced the price, nor the opening date for orders.
