Hyundai Motorsport is unable to fix the car of their FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) driver Teemu Lappi for the restart of the season on Sunday, as the team have been unable to source the necessary replacement parts.
The Finnish driver, who is currently ranked fourth in the WRC standings, suffered a mechanical issue during the day’s first stage, forcing him to retire from the competition. In the wake of his exit, Hyundai Motorsport were unable to source the required parts to repair his car, with the restart of the season set to take place on Sunday.
“We are disappointed to announce that Teemu Lappi and Janne Ferm will not be able to continue their Rally de Portugal campaign,” said a statement released by Hyundai. “Despite the best efforts of the team, we have not been able to source the required parts to repair the car in time for the restart of the championship on Sunday.”
Hyundai Motorsport have been unable to source the requisite components to undertake repairs to Lappi’s car, signifying that the Finnish driver will have to wait until the next round of the WRC to resume his championship challenge.
The team’s statement continued: “We apologise to Teemu, Janne and our supporters for this unfortunate outcome. We are now focusing our efforts on preparing for the next event in the WRC calendar, Rally Italia Sardegna, and look forward to seeing Teemu and Janne back in action.”
Despite Hyundai Motorsport’s inability to effect repairs to Lappi’s car in time for the restart of the season, the team remain optimistic that the Finnish driver will be able to resume his championship challenge in the near future.
