The Japanese brand has the distinction of having two “Mazda 2” in the inventory. One “home”, a clean city car, the other “signature” Toyota, the twin sister of the Yaris. But it appears today to distinguish itself from the previous model and get closer to domestic guns. Good idea.
In the game of differences, there is no danger of confusing Mazda 2 (signed Mazda) and Mazda 2 Hybrid (strongly “inspired” by Yaris). On the other hand, this Mazda 2 Hybrid suffered a bit due to the merger with Toyota. Since the “two sekku” are still together in the Hiroshima brand catalog (salespeople must be smart to understand and guide customers!), with two different jobs, something had to be done. It’s done.
In its new production, marked, in particular, by the characteristic grille of the world of Mazda and the disappearance of the black belt on the tailgate in favor of a part of the body color, we should no longer confuse the cousins. The compact also changes inside with a screen (9” in the entry level, 10”5 from the second level of finish and also a 12”3 digital instrument cluster) but retains, under the hood the same solution.
The three-cylinder petrol unit (still not very smart, sometimes even noisy …) is associated with a small 80 horsepower electric motor to get a power of 116 horsepower, more than enough to keep the whole thing going.
Fun convenience on a small pass
“Toy”, in its new version, also offers a power of 130 horses which does not please its partner who cares more about its CO2 balance, very valuable in Europe, than improving the performance of the “small”. They are, in any case, let’s repeat, up to the task of their mission in any way of use. On the fast roads of Catalonia which are often uneven, its recovery is amazing, and we pass from one “squad” to another without losing breath at all. A little further on the sea, on small tracks that move in the whole sector, without mercy to the mechanics and brakes, Mazda 2 dares a few muscle clauses with an enjoyable ease. 9”7 in the 0-100 km/h test, 175 km/h peak, nothing to add to the performance. The chassis and suspension settings are not affected, and that’s good news, even if the car is struggling to dig more “masculine” faces.
An example of rational efficiency
Back in the world of hybrids, Yaris technology, chosen wisely, shines with its water. The switch between heating, electric or mixed modes is always done smoothly and without a little fuss. An example of smart efficiency, one of the properties of this Mazda which, in the city of course, proves to be a very pleasant and very fast companion. It also complements the safety department and, among other things and as usual, lane departure warning, pre-collision system, cruise control and traffic sign recognition, very important in the forest without queues or head nor the reason for our beautiful country.
The Homura Plus, the top end of the offering, has a higher display and a larger panel roof. Like a real adult! The two “top” finishes should represent almost half of Mazda 2 sales.

6 years. Mazda is celebrating the first anniversary of its new warranty. In January 2023, the brand moved to “coverage” from 3 years / 100,000 km to 6 years / 150,000 km for all its new cars. Strong commitment to its customers and, of course, the “2” that we discover here is affected by this law.

Take a walk. In 2023, on the French market of 1,775,000 units, Mazda achieved a market share of 0.57% and aims for the same mark for 2024 (and 0.75% in the areas covered). Laurent Thézée, president of Mazda France, highlighted during the 2nd presentation the development of the presence of the brand and, for our region, the new sites in Castres and Tarbes. By 2024, Mazda 2 Hybrid (16%) should come in third place for the manufacturer, behind the leading CX-30 (24%) and Mazda 3 (17%).
