It’s a border battle: unseeded Wisconsin looks to upset No. 2 Minnesota in Frozen Four semifinal – Duluth News Tribune

In a highly anticipated clash between two of the most decorated programs in college hockey, the Wisconsin Badgers and Minnesota Golden Gophers will face off in the NCAA Frozen Four semifinals at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York.

The Badgers, who enter the contest as the unseeded squad, will look to pull off the upset against their second-seeded rivals. The Gophers, on the other hand, are aiming to defend their 2018 title, something that only Wisconsin (2006, 2007, 2009) and Michigan (1996, 1998, 2003, 2010) have accomplished in the modern era.

Wisconsin, which is making its 11th appearance in the Frozen Four and first since 2014, is led by a trio of veteran forwards – Dylan Holloway, Cole Caufield and Sean Dhooghe – who have combined for 67 goals and 144 points this season. They are supported by a veteran defensive corps featuring K’Andre Miller, Ty Emberson and Wyatt Kalynuk, all of whom have seen playing time in the NCAA tournament.

In net, the Badgers have senior Jack Berry, who has posted a .917 save percentage in the tournament. His veteran presence has been a key factor in Wisconsin’s success, as he has allowed just five goals in the last four games.

Meanwhile, Minnesota enters the game as the reigning NCAA champions and the second seed in the tournament. The Gophers are led by forward Sampo Ranta, who has recorded 16 points in the tournament so far. He is supported by a deep and experienced group of forwards and defensemen, including Ryan Zuhlsdorf, Brannon McManus, Sammy Walker and Brent Gates, Jr.

In net, Minnesota has Mat Robson, who has posted a .912 save percentage in the tournament. His steady play has been a major factor in the Gophers’ success, as he has allowed just six goals in the last five games.

With such an evenly matched roster, it promises to be a thrilling border battle. The winner will advance to the Frozen Four final, where they will face either Boston College or Northeastern.
