Lexus and time at Milan Design Week 2024

The installation by the first Japanese brand exhibited during Fuorisalone via Tortona is called Time. Two works whose subject is the passage of time

April 15 – 5.19pm – MILAN

A view of a car that stops and intersects what appears to be the horizon with car parts that change color and make sounds. It is called Time Lexus installation for Milan Design Week 2024 on view from 16 to 21 April at Superstudio Più via Tortona, 27.

two jobs

Installation is made up of two functions: Beyond the horizon by Hideki Yoshimoto/Tangent, an installation inspired by the LF-ZC (Lexus Future Zero-emission Catalyst) concept car, a new modern electrified model that will allow for high-powered driving; 8 minutes and 20 seconds and Dutch solar designer Marjan van Aubel, where timeless themes reflect the progress Lexus has made in designing and manufacturing consumer-oriented vehicles. The title refers to the time it takes for sunlight to reach the earth.

Solar power

Specifically, 8 minutes and 20 seconds it is a sun sculpture that evokes the presence of viewers who move around and explore different perspectives. With this installation, Marjan van Aubel shows Lexus’ commitment to mobility innovation, meeting the challenges of electrification and technology, aiming for carbon balance and high quality. Four motion sensors cause the light to bounce and sway like water on the base of the installation, which represents the vehicle’s EV system. At unexpected intervals, the installation manifests itself in a fleeting glimpse: the light descends like a pitch of sound, reflecting the dynamics of the car in motion and giving an impression of the energy and fluidity of driving. The work uses solar energy, thanks to the organic photovoltaic plates (OPV): the energy is stored in batteries connected and used to run the work exhibition which, in turn, creates the illusion of time passing , where the warm tones of the dawn give off. cool tone method. The installation also features the natural sounds of pianos, string instruments and music boxes, as well as chirping birds and bamboo plucking.

big screen

Instead of Beyond the horizon combines the most advanced technology with ancient Japanese craftsmanship to create an immersive space that features a series of two-meter tall sculptures that, although they look the same, create plays of light to give the illusion of entering a different atmosphere. It is positioned at the center of the LF-ZC packaging, a symbol of the innovation and mobility of the future of Lexus. The installation consists of a large projection screen (4 meters by 30 meters) whose material is inspired by the heritage of the ancient Echizen “washi” paper, known for the screens found in traditional Japanese homes. In this case, it was made with bamboo fibers, recalling the presence of this sustainable material in the interior of the LF-ZC and recalling the famous Lexus craftsmanship, which always echoes its precious Japanese heritage. The screen shows a sequence of projections, from dawn to dusk, accompanied by an original and abstract soundscape created by music composer Keiichiro Shibuya.

In the Superstudio you can also see the Lbx, an SUV with a length of 4,190 mm, up close. The engine is a complete hybrid with a 1.5-liter three-cylinder combustion engine and an enhanced electric unit to produce a total of 136 HP and 185 Nm of maximum torque, delivered to the front or the E-Four wheel.
