“Little wanderers” – children of the road moved by their victory – Two

  • On September 9, the film directed by Krzysztof Łukaszewicz “Orlęta. Grodno ’39” is released.
  • This is a story about the defense of Grodno against Soviet troops who entered Poland on September 17, 1939, shown from the perspective of children.

The action of the film takes place at the beginning of the Second World War in the Polish city of Grodno (today Belarus), which was attacked by the Soviets on September 17, 1939, unexpectedly crossing the eastern border of the Republic of Poland. Grodno was one of the few points of resistance on the insecure Eastern Front.

Children’s attention

The main characters in the film are very young, basically children who have recently become teenagers.

– We meet these heroes just before the outbreak of war, there is already a certain tension, a certain social context. The atmosphere of impending terror is already visible. I think that guiding this story through the prism of childhood sensibility gave this film a lot – the actor was guaranteed.

To prove the truth during the war

Jowita Budnik – known for her roles in films such as “Zbawiciela”, “Papusza”, “Silent Night” or “All our fears” – plays the role of a Jewish woman who, after the death of her husband, raises her two sons alone. .

– One is almost an adult, the other is 12-13 years old who is just entering the world of youth, but also of adults. It’s a little story about how the decadence of childhood collides with brutal reality. And the mother, as a mother, tries to be a barrier between her and this world that is more and more frightening – said Jowita Budnik. – But such pleasant facts during the war do not help much – he admits.

The film “Eaglets. Grodno ’39” tells about a lesser-known event of the Second World War, ie the defense of Grodno against the Soviet troops who entered Poland on September 17, 1939. The scriptwriter and director is Krzysztof Łukaszewicz.

Grodno, Poland’s eastern border before the war. On September 1, 1939, German planes bombed the city, one of the bombs hit the school of Leoś, Ewelina and Tadek. Literally and figuratively, the world of carefree, fun and first childhood is ending. Leoś is 12 years old, a Jewish boy, fascinated by the tradition of Polish independence.

On September 17, 1939, under the Soviet-German agreement, the Red Army enters Poland, on September 20 it plans to take Grodno. The city begins a hopeless struggle. A few military units are supported by the civilian population, especially school students. It is children and young people who heroically defend the city, and become victims of the incredible cruelty of the inhabitants.

“Eaglets” is the first film about the aggression of Soviet troops against Poland in September 1939.
