Grünheide. Environmental activists have been protesting against the Tesla factory for weeks. The court overruled the demands of the police, who filed a complaint against them. Now there is disagreement about the issue of risk.
There is a dispute in the government of the state of Brandenburg about the possible dangers in the protest camp against the Tesla factory in Grünheide. The Ministry of the Interior warns of possible dangers from old weapons and forest fires, while the Ministry of Environment does not see any danger in this regard. Interior Minister Michael Stübgen (CDU) called on Environment Minister Axel Vogel (Greens) to have the risk of explosive ammunition clarified. “We consider the risk very high,” Stübgen said Wednesday at the state parliament’s interior committee in Potsdam. The state forest – the owner of the area – is obliged to investigate the danger. Because he did not, the remains of the law had already been found during his own search.
The Ministry of Environment does not share these concerns. The head of the department of environmental conservation and forestry, Frank Reichel, said that the tree houses and camping tents are not for the forest, and that the cooking facilities and places for self-help were carefully considered. However, there is no evidence of an increase in the possibility of suspected explosive weapons in the area of the camp. The Ministry also could not identify any risk of forest fire. However, Reichel promised a new review if there is new information.
Since the end of February, environmental activists have been protesting in the forest near the factory of the American electric car manufacturer Tesla against the planned expansion of the site, including a freight yard, from which the forest would have to be cleared. At last count, about 70 people lived in the camp and about 18 tree houses were built.
In March, the Potsdam Administrative Court strengthened the activists’ position and overturned the police’s demands. Among other things, the leaders wanted the tree houses to be demolished. The court did not consider the risk justification to be specific enough. The police had lodged a complaint against the decision at the Higher Administrative Court of Berlin-Brandenburg. The deadline for justification ends on Friday next week.
