NHTSA launches investigation into Cadillac LYRIQ electronic brake defects

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into the 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ electric vehicles following several reports from owners claiming brake assist loss in the vehicles.

The investigation was prompted by a review of the early warning field report, according to NHTSA documents seen by Teslarati. It will affect 3,322 units, with the loss of brake assist and possible limitation of ABS functionality.

NHTSA summarizes the issue:

“The Office of Defect Investigation (ODI) has received numerous Early Information field reports claiming a loss of brake assist in MY2023 Cadillac LYRIQ vehicles. The reports claim a hard brake pedal, followed by a “Brake System Failure” message when starting or while driving.

General Motors has also confirmed the Early Warning Statement. GM told NHTSA that the internal spindle of the eBoost system can break during an ABS event.

The automaker also said it has developed an over-the-air update to support the brake booster circuit and detect if the spindle system has broken. If it was broken, the warning lights would flash and prompt the customer to take the car to the dealer for repair.

NHTSA said in its investigation documents, “ODI is conducting this Preliminary Evaluation (PE) to determine the scope and severity of a potential problem and to fully evaluate safety-related issues.”

GM is offering a $5,500 rebate on the Cadillac Lyriq to willing drivers

The LYRIQ has been very successful for Cadillac and has generated a lot of demand. Its 2023 upgrade sold out within four minutes of its launch.

The automaker had also launched new strategies to improve cabin noise to make the car quieter.
