New SUV (partial) SUV should increase sales of Alfa Romeo again | NOW

Sometimes the manufacturer is in such bad weather that the new style almost real should pull the brand away from the gates of hell. Alfa Romeo of Italy is a similar brand. The role of the new Tonale SUV lies on the shoulders of the story maker to achieve the desired success.

That could turn out very well, by the way. The Peugeot 205 is popular. In the second half of the 1970s, Peugeot became the sole owner of Citroën and also took over the Chrysler branch of Europe. That turned out to be complicated, as a result of which the brand ended in red in 1980 and tens of thousands of layoffs were made. With 205, introduced in 1983, problems did not disappear immediately, but a higher path was taken. Alfa Romeo wants to do the same with Tonale.

Over the past twenty years, Alfa Romeo has seen its European sales decline. Where the brand can still celebrate in 2001 that it had sold more than 200,000 cars a year for the first time since 1990, by 2021 there were still about 25,000.

Images in the Netherlands are not very different. By the late 1990s, Alfa Romeo was approaching 10,000 cars annually, but by 2021 sales had dropped to 173 units.

The first months of this year also did not look good for Alfa Romeo. Only 38 new Alfa Romeos registered in the Netherlands in January and February. Even Bentley put 41 more cars on Dutch license numbers in those months.

Finally on the plug

The problem that plays tricks for Alfa Romeo is the lack of models. That has only intensified in recent years with the disappearance of smaller cars such as the MiTo and Giulietta. And no matter how well Stelvio was received by the press in 2016, the share of the high-class sedan had already dwindled.

In addition, some form of electricity was lacking, so business success also surpassed Alfa Romeo’s nose. The same problem eventually played a trick on the Stelvio SUV.

For Tonale, the first completely new style in six years, those things should be put right. First and foremost, it is a compact SUV, especially the size that has been very successful in the Netherlands and Europe. Just look at the results that Volvo, for example, achieves with its XC40. In addition, hybrid and hybrid trains are now available for Alpha, so that Tonale can be competitively marketed in the Netherlands.

The future of electricity under the wings of Stellantis

Alfa Romeo is now a major Stellantis brand, offering access to a wide variety of platforms and power trains. This should lead to the first Alfa Romeo full electric car in 2024. That car could go Brennero and it is unlikely that this model will share its technology with cars such as the Peugeot e-2008 and Opel Mokka-e.

Alfa Romeo Electronics is also the prelude to the full electric future of the Italian brand. Starting in 2025, it only wants to sell electric cars.

One of them will be a Great SUV compete with cars like the BMW X5. It is also not excluded that Giulia will have all the electricity heir he gets. The model will have to work at a higher level, as a future competitor (as well as electronics). BMW i5
