US policy on protecting critical infrastructure from hackers is outdated and needs to be updated, according to some US lawmakers. The example of a cyber attack on the Colonial Pipeline in 2021 should prove this theory.
A committee was created in the US Congress to analyze the cyber security of the country’s critical infrastructure. The conclusions from the investigation and the results of the report are not encouraging.
A decade of change
The past decade has brought significant changes in the context of cyber security. The number and type of threats has increased rapidly, and this translates into the security of not only individuals, but also the entire country.
“The security environment has changed dramatically in the last decade. Technologies have changed, the risk landscape has changed. And because policy and regulation has evolved around these threats, it’s often been done in an ad hoc way rather than a systemic or holistic way,” Mary Brooks , public policy expert at the Wilson Center and co-author of the report, quoted by CyberScoop.
Better coordination is required
According to the members of the committee, there are Cyber and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), under the US Department of Homeland Security, is not prepared to respond quickly to cyber threats.
An example of the lack of preparation for today’s challenges is the already mentioned attack on the colonial pipeline in 2021. The attack crippled the gas supply in the United States and, according to the commission, showed that the cyber security policy of government agencies needs to be improved by a large amount on several levels. One of them is communication with the FBI.
The White House is working on this improvement. In November, President Biden’s administration announced that it was in the process of drafting policy directives to establish in 2013 rules for cooperation between federal agencies and operators of critical infrastructure. Otherwise – no change – US cyber security will be seriously threatened.
