Quick job: Cadillac sweeps three tennis; more preparatory games | Sports


CADILLAC — That seemed easy.

Cadillac picked up a non-league tennis victory by defeating Boyne City 8-0 and Mount Pleasant 8-0 in a triple-header Monday.

“Today was an exciting day for all the girls,†Cadillac coach Erin Schaefer said. “They showed the ability to make smart decisions on the court and each came out on top in both of their matches.

Haylee Groen defeated Boyne City by default to beat Mount Pleasant 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 singles while Sara Outman defeated Boyne City 6-1, 6-2 and beat Mount Pleasant 6-0, 6-0 at No. . 2.

Averee Heuker beat BC 6-1, 6-0 and beat MP 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 while Natalia Torrado beat Boyne 6-0. 6-0 and defeated MP 7-5, 6-2 at number 4.

Ellery Schaefer and Aly Baker beat Boyne City 6-0, 6-2 and beat Mount Pleasant 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles.

Grace Munch and Adri Beydoun beat BC 6-0, 6-0 and beat MP 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

Clara Brown and Carly Gaylord beat BC 6-1, 6-1 and defeated MP 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.

Grace Drabik and Myah Goetz defeated BC 6-1, 6-0 and defeated MP 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4.

Cadillac competes in the Up North Invitational today at Traverse City Central.

LEROY — Pine River opened its season by sweeping Harrison, 5-2 and 20-2, in non-league play.

“For the first time out, I was really pleased with the way we fielded the ball and the way our hitters lined up,†Pine River coach Mike Nelson said. “We have a lot of work to do but, all in all, I was very pleased with how they did.”

Kylee Mumby got the win in the opener, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out 14.

Mumby helped herself at the plate with two hits while Lanie Sparks, Miriam Johnson and Sabrina Cutler each had a hit and an RBI.

Sadler Mumby got the win in the nightcap, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out nine.

Sadler Mumby had three hits, including two doubles, and five RBIs while Kylee Mumby had two hits, a triple and three RBIs. Cutler had a hit and an RBI while Lilly Felsk had a hit and Sparks drove in a run.

Pine River hosts Kingsley on Wednesday.

ROSCOMMON — Buckley secured a non-conference win by sweeping Roscommon 18-0 and 15-0.

Kayla Milarch got the win in the first game, throwing a scoreless inning while striking out 11.

Maddie Chilson, Milarch and Maddie Snider paced Buckley with three hits apiece.

Chilson threw a no-hitter in the second game and struck out 12. At the plate, Allanah Kline had a double and a double while Allie Brimmer had a triple.

LEROY — Pine River opened its season with an 11-1 win over Harrison in non-league play. The second game was called due to darkness in the fourth inning.

“We’ve only been on the field a few times so I was impressed with the way the guys played and played,” Pine River coach Shawn Ruppert said. “We had a lot of guys out there and the returners had their heads in the game.

“We played well, we played good defense and we got big hits when we needed them.â€

Xander Martin got the win for the Bucks, allowing one earned run on three hits and no walks while striking out three in three innings of work.

At the plate, Martin had a hit and an RBI; Nate Marks hit and RBI; Braeden Larr with an RBI; Kaiden Hubble scored twice; and Nate Williams RBI.

Pine River hosts Kingsley on Wednesday.

BALDWIN — Marion opened its season in West Michigan D League play by sweeping Baldwin 29-1 and 32-0.

“Baldwin is a young team and we hit the ball very well but we need to hit more shots on the mound,†Marion coach Chad Grundy said.

Cole Meyer got the win in the first game, allowing one hit and six walks while striking out eight.

At the plate, Gavin Prielipp had four hits, including a home run, and seven RBI; Cayden McCrimmon hit; Collin McCrimmon three hits and an RBI; Tucker Sigafoose had two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs; Meyer two hits and an RBI; Aaron Whitney with an RBI; Dru VanEpps two hits and an RBI; James Williams double htis and two RBI; and Brody Mungar is an RBI.

Sigafoose threw two scoreless innings in the second game while walking four and striking out six.

At the plate, Prielipp had four hits and four RBI; Cayden McCrimmon three hits and four RBI; Collin McCrimmon three hits and two RBI; Sigafoose had three hits and two RBIs; Meyer two hits and three RBIs; Whitney struck; VanEpps three hits and an RBI; Dominic Eling hit and RBI; Williams hit and RBI; and Cameron Prielipp three hits and four RBIs.

Marion is at Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart for a tournament on Saturday.

KINGSLEY — McBain dropped two non-league games to Kingsley, 16-0 and 18-1.

“The last thing I like to do is make excuses but not show up for our seniors,†McBain coach Shaun Mulder said. “We made a lot of mistakes and we didn’t have that composure when things went wrong.

“I was proud of all the young people that we had to withdraw to cover our absence from the seniors. It was a lot to put on them but the experience they gained will be beneficial in the long run.â

Colton Haverkamp had the Ramblers’ lone goal in the first game while Trenton Brunink took the loss.

Bryce Akom hit in the second game and Heuker drove in a run. Haverkamp took the loss.

BRTHREN — Mesick opened West Michigan D League play by sweeping Brethren, 22-1 and 15-0.

Gabe Bradley got the win in the first game for the Bulldogs. He allowed no earned runs on one hit and two walks while striking out 10.

At the plate, Cooper Ford had two hits, including a double, and two RBI; Ben Humphreys two hits and two RBI; Connor Sisson hit and RBI; Jayden Simpson with an RBI; Bradley and RBI; Tyler Hall had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs; Issac Stroh two RBIs; Andrew Osborne and RBI; and Kenan Sannis hit.

Cody Linna threw a no-hitter in the second game. He walked two and struck out five in three innings of work.

At the plate, Ford had two hits; Humphreys hit and RBI; Simpson hit and two RBI; Linna two hits, including two, and three RBI; Stroh and RBI; and Vogler tripled with three RBIs.

Mesick (2-1 overall) is at Bear Lake on Thursday.

MANTON —The Manton boys started the outdoor season on the right note when they took first place in their Rust Shaker Invitational.

The Rangers were first with 151 points while Frankfort was second with 127 points, Grand Traverse Academy was third with 125 points and Marion was fifth with 37.

“I am very pleased with where the boys are at this early season,†Manton coach Trevor Thiebaut said. “Many PRs and some close to PRs or well ahead of where they were last season.

“I am happy for this season.â€

First place finishers for Manton were Tyler Harding in the 200 meter dash at 24.71 seconds; Reece Traxler in the 400 dash in 55.83 seconds; Robert Dykhouse in the 800 (2:15.12) and 1600 (5:00.56); and Zander Johnigan in the 300 hurdles (45.13 seconds).

The foursome of Traxler, Luke Pettengill, Dykhouse and Johngian took first in the 1600 relay in 3:44.30, as well.

Carter Helsel took first in the shot put at 48 feet, 6 inches and first in the discus at 130-1.

Marion’s Braden Prielipp took first in the high jump at 6-8

GTA took first place on the girls side with 145 points while Manton was second with 122 points, Frankfort third with 93 and Marion sixth with 30.

Manton’s Kennedi Wahmhoff took first in the high jump at 4-8 while the foursome of Aubrey Hiller, Betsey Gooden, Brooklyn McNalley and Kadence Wurm took first in the 3200 with a time of 12:09.83.

The 800 relay of Kaitlyn Carter, Makayla Gowell, Taylor Bigelow and Reganne Stahl took first in 2:07.67.

“The team came out strong today with good attitudes and it was great weather to meet,†Manton coach Jeff Harding said.

“It is proof of their desire to improve that we put together four 1600 second relay teams.

“Hitting the line with one more optional run shows who is hungry and who is content.â€

Marion’s McKayla Cruson took first in the shot put at 110-4.

BUCKLEY — Buckley moved its record to 2-1 as it defeated the Brethren 5-0 in a non-conference contest.

Aiden Romzek scored twice for the Bears while Taylor Yuresko, Avalon Valentine and Kaylee Swanson each scored one.

Buckley will host Glen Lake on Wednesday.

CADILLAC — The Cadillac JV girls soccer team defeated Mount Pleasant 2-0.

Alyssa Kovacevich scored on a penalty kick in the first half while Leah Christensen scored in the second half off a Ceci Billsby pass.

Audrina Runyon made five saves in goal.
