At first glance, the Skoda Superb Combi is nothing like a limousine: it is rather discreet, it is a simple station wagon and its base price of 45,000 euros does not make it impossible. And yet… 90 years ago, the Superb really started its career as a real limousine. Initially, the model was aimed at luxury customers and target competitors such as Mercedes and even Rolls-Royce. Special thanks to its features that made the Skoda Superb a strong competitor, such as its separation between the driver and passengers or the beautiful woodwork. In addition, it was only sold with a dining car, which was the equivalent of a real limousine at the time.

Simple details make all the difference?

90 years later, the modern Superb has become the ultimate tourer: a well-equipped and comfortable model for long journeys. Fortunately, it retains several marks from its limousine past, such as its umbrella, which can also function as a parasol, hidden in the driver’s door.

But this is not the only small attention that Skoda gives to its passengers: in the back, they benefit from a headrest that holds securely, a holder for a smartphone or a tablet on the armrest; on the front, the manufacturer hits hard with something simple: a mini brush to erase fingerprints from the central touch screen. An insignificant detail, but which makes the difference between Skoda and the competition, since no other brand has thought to integrate these devices, nevertheless it is important.

The luxury of mind far from the price of things

Once behind the wheel, the feeling is clearly very far from that of old limousines or German Premium. In the Skoda Superb Combi, you’ll have to make do with the smaller 4-cylinder that develops just 150 horsepower. It’s enough to move this 4.90 meter and 1,575 kg station wagon, but the 150 horse power might be a little difficult to transport the whole family and their luggage. And when climbing a hill, this small engine does not seem to be enough either: the car struggles to move forward, with only two people. For more power, a plug-in hybrid version of the 200 will arrive in the coming months, with an additional 100 kilometers of electric range.

But what if luxury was ultimately not the space offered by the new Superb Combi? In this case, this model would be one of the most luxurious cars in the world with its 690 L trunk space. And inside the latter, Skoda offers a new surprise: 12 V sockets, hooks or even small modules to hold all kinds of things that can move around in this large space. And when the rear seats are folded, we are faced with a utility vehicle of… 1,920 L. So obviously, all this space, its low consumption (5.4 L/100 km) and its good presentation make this car the model of choice for a taxi. . Especially since its price is far from things: from 45,480 euros.
