Activists at the protest camp at the Tesla factory in Grünheide are defending themselves against allegations from Brandenburg Interior Minister Michael Stübgen (CDU). A spokesperson for the “Stop Tesla” initiative said Friday that they were “surprised” by Stübgen’s personal statements. It is not true that living trees were cut down.
Stübgen reported to the Interior Committee on Wednesday that the activists had cut down 70- to 90-year-old pine trees and destroyed two hunting lodges. “We think this is propaganda,” said a spokesman for the activists. The country is desperately looking for reasons to ban the protest camp.
The activists have been occupying a part of the forest near the electric car factory since the end of February. They want to block the planned expansion of the factory area. The police had recently tried to impose strict conditions on the camp, but failed after the activists’ urgent appeal to the administrative court in Potsdam.
According to the forest residents, police officers are now visiting the camp more often. This appears to be an attempt at intimidation, said the spokesman. Recently, a police officer slightly injured a musician in the camp while trying to take away the instrument from him. There is always a little provocation from the leaders. That was certainly not planned, but it reflects the general state of the police, the spokesman said. When asked, the police spokesperson previously had no information about such an incident.
