(Motorsport-Total.com) – At the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, 33 participants of the 2023 IndyCar summer season, the Indianapolis 500, have completed their training sessions. On Friday, “Carb Day”, the final two-hour practice session for the 107th edition of the Indy 500 (Sunday) took place.
Lots of driving with Takuma Sato leading the way in the final practice session of the 107th Indy 500.
There were some minor incidents on the last day of training, but no accidents. In addition to the usual track inspection cautions, there were some because a wheel came off Katherine Legge’s Rahal-Honda while exiting the pit lane, and because there was damage to the right front tire on Devlin’s Andretti-Honda DeFrancesco. Wall communication was able to avoid both. (Photo: Practice and qualifying for the 107th Indy 500)
Aside from fatal crashes by Stefan Wilson and Katherine Legge in Monday’s practice, there were no crashes in nearly two weeks of practice and qualifying for this year’s Indy 500.
In the final training, which took place under clear skies, all 33 pilots were on the runway. The fastest lap of the day went to Takuma Sato (Ganassi-Honda) with an average speed of 227.855 mph (366.619 km/h) in a time of 39.499 seconds.
The top 5 on “Carb Day” are: Takuma Sato, followed by Scott Dixon (Ganassi-Honda), Will Power (Penske-Chevrolet), Polesitter Alex Palou (Ganassi-Honda), Kyle Kirkwood (Andretti-Honda).
Behind them, Agustin Canapino (Juncos-Chevrolet) led the second half of the top 10 as the fastest player, followed by Colton Herta (Andretti-Honda), Romain Grosjean (Andretti-Honda), Josef Newgarden (Penske-Chevrolet). and Scott McLaughlin (Penske Chevrolet). Josef Newgarden, David Malukas (Coyne-Honda; 16th) and Rinus VeeKay (Carpenter-Chevrolet; 33rd) led the most laps in the final practice session, 89 laps each.
The fact that VeeKay was right at the end of the time list was in no small part due to the fact that his white/gold Carpenter Chevrolet previously had the biggest vibrations. On Sunday, VeeKay will start from the front row. In preparation for the race, major modifications were also made to the McLaren Chevrolet of Alexander Rossi (14th) on Friday.
Graham Rahal, who is standing in front of the injured Stefan Wilson at Dreyer & Reinbold Racing and who underwent surgery on Wednesday evening, ended his only day of practice at the unknown team with a Chevy-powered P30 car on the timesheets.
Ryan Hunter-Reay, who finished P22 in the second Dreyer/Reinbold Chevrolet, was brought into the pits early under a black flag because his car was losing gear oil. With 34 laps, Hunter-Reay drove the least.
On Sunday’s 107th Indy 500 grid, Graham Rahal sits 33rd. He didn’t even qualify for his previous team, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, but as Stefan Wilson’s backup driver at Dreyer & Reinbold Racing, he gets the final starting spot. .
The 500-mile race starts on Sunday, including a detailed pre-race show, at 11:00 am local time (5:00 pm CEST). The 200-lap start to finish is at 12:45 pm (18:45 pm CEST).
