Thanks to this new battery, Porsche drivers are racing to their summer home in Monaco in no time.

The Porsche Taycan is the pinnacle of electric cars. Porsche would like to maintain this position and is working on new and better battery packs. It sees an impressive range of 1300 km as possible.

And then we are not talking about the solid state battery that Porsche, like many other car brands, works on. These batteries are seen as the holy grail in EV land, because they have more energy, offer greater range and charge faster. However, the solid-state battery is still under development and is not expected to be widely available on the market in the coming years.

Anode is the key to success

Porsche hopes to achieve a range of 1300 km by modifying the design of the current lithium-ion battery. Anode is the key to long range. Anode is part of the battery and acts as a kind of parking garage for electrons in the state of charge.

Currently, the anode is usually made of graphite, but Porsche wants to supplement or replace this material with silicon. Battery packs with silicon offer more storage capacity and are also much faster to charge. The battery can be charged from 5 to 80 percent within 15 minutes.

Silicon is also a common and cheap element, which also requires very little material. This makes the production of battery packs more environmentally friendly.

Not all hosanna

The use of silicon in battery packs also has disadvantages. When silicon particles absorb lithium, they expand by 300 percent. This will affect the life of the battery. That’s why Porsche is working on battery design with silicon and graphite.

A big step

If the development is successful and silicon battery packs can be used, it will represent a major step in the EV landscape. The intended range of 1300 km will be a significant improvement compared to today’s battery packs. For comparison: the longer-range Taycan (83.7 kWh, 517 hp) has a WLTP range of 505 km.
