Nissan and Lola-Yamaha: Good news for Formula E

After Formula E failed to shine with any positive news in the last few months and was in danger of being forgotten due to the seven-week race break since the start of the season in January, now there were two big bangs: In addition to the Nissan initiative, the company The traditional Lola Cars was also in Tokyo announced its entry into Formula E from 2025 in technical cooperation with motorcycle manufacturer Yamaha.

“The technological breakthroughs we achieve in motor racing will provide valuable insights into the development of our future products,” Nissan Chairman Uchida was quoted as saying in a press release. “We are excited to see how the future of electric racing unfolds and continue to work towards a sustainable world for all.”

Nissan’s history of Formula E events

Nissan was the first manufacturer from Japan to enter Formula E as a factory in season 5 (2018/19). The automaker followed Renault’s sister company in the e.dams team, which always had a license to start participating in Formula E. Under the Renault e.dams name, the team won the team championship three times in a row and won the drivers’ title and Sebastien Buemi in 2015/16. In 2022, Nissan took over the entire e.dams project under sole factory management.

In the last three years, Nissan has struggled with many personnel changes and has also suffered the consequences of a complete redesign of the powertrain for the 6th season (2019/20). In season 5 (2018/19), the Japanese caused headaches for the competition with the FIA with an innovative two-car system.

The twin MGU-H engine ensured unprecedented qualifying dominance, but showed weakness in the race. Buemi finished runner-up in the championship in Season 5 before FIA rule changes forced Nissan to develop a completely new engine.

For the 2022/23 season, Nissan management and team boss Tommaso Volpe completely changed two drivers and instead relied on the two Frenchmen Sacha Fenestraz and Norman Nato. Nato was replaced after a year and reinstated Rowland.

In the current 2024 season, the second year with Gen3 cars, Nissan is back on track. England’s Rowland won on the podium in Saudi Arabia and Sao Paulo during the The Nissan McLaren customer team recently celebrated its first victory in Formula E in Brazil through Sam Bird. McLaren takes fourth place in the team championship, engine supplier Nissan is sixth overall behind leader Jaguar.

In addition to Nissan, a total of six manufacturers, Porsche, Jaguar, DS Automobiles, Mahindra and ERT (formerly NIO), are involved in Formula E. In 2025, another brand, Lola-Yamaha, will be added, which will bring the start of the field back after the departure of Audi at the end of 2022 will grow to twelve teams.
