The FIA’s response to the disgrace of the world champion Verstappen / Formula 1

That was crazy: there was Suzuka winner Max Verstappen standing in the parc fermé on October 9, 2022, not knowing that he had just become champion for the second time. Max later said: “That was very funny.”

Rain at the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka on October 9, 2022 allowed only 28 laps, and even the veterans of Formula 1 were convinced: now the rule with reduced points of the World Championship will be used.

In the Red Bull Championship, too, team members initially believed that the decision of the World Championship would be postponed to Austin (Texas). Max Verstappen gave an interview in the parc fermé without knowing that he had successfully defended his world title.

In the command posts of the team, among the media and among the millions of fans, heads were spinning – was Verstappen now the champion or not? Shame on Formula 1.

The FIA interpreted the rules differently than many fans and experts expected: there are only points for World Championship races that have been canceled and subsequently not restarted. The Grand Prix at Suzuka, on the other hand, looked perfect, although not at the full race distance.

Everything is not clear? Then you’re with the good guys, because Verstappen said after the race: “Okay, it was a bit chaotic, but looking back it’s really funny. When I crossed the finish line, I knew it wasn’t enough, even with full points. Because Charles was still second behind me, and I hadn’t run faster.”

Max continues: “Then I heard about the penalty of Charles Leclerc, who had to drop to 3rd place behind Sergio Pérez. But it was still not clear to me what exactly they are doing with the points. At that time it was like, ‘Okay, I wanted to win here, I did it, then I’ll go and win the title in Texas.’ I gave my first victory interview to Sky’s Johnny Herbert, who said I had the crown in my pocket. I immediately saw my technicians explode with joy. I was like, ‘Well, what’s going on there?’

“While I was still wondering if that would be enough for the unsatisfactory points, Tom Wood, the FIA Press Officer, came up to me and said: ‘You really are a champion!'”

“We celebrated a bit, but some people came up to me and said, ‘No, that’s not enough! You’re missing a meter!’ At this point I found it all strange. But in the end it was enough, and now I am the champion – albeit after a few mistakes.”

According to FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, new sporting director Steve Nielsen is currently working hard to clarify the rules so that Formula 1 does not manifest itself in such nonsense again. These changes will be implemented in the rules before the start of the season.
