Electric Genesis G80 Magma Tips In Performance Sedan

The fully electric version of the original concept is painted in China’s special Acme Blue shade

  • Genesis is unveiling the Magma G80 EV electric concept at the Beijing Auto Show.
  • This concept has a unique blue exterior, a set of carbon fiber, and highlights the performance with a powerful electric power train.
  • Genesis hints at the possibility of a production version, but its availability outside of China is still unknown.

While the V6-powered Genesis G80 Magma concept is still fresh in our minds, the Korean brand presented an electric version of the performance-oriented sedan at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show. China-specific, along with a new set of 21-inch aero wheels, and a set of carbon fiber.

According to SangYup Lee, Head of Global Design at Genesis, the new shade shows that the Magma program is “not bound by a single color or form”. Acme Blue was inspired by blue flames that are known to burn at a higher temperature.

Another highlight of the new concept are the 21-inch alloy wheels that not only reduce unladen weight but also contribute to brake cooling thanks to their aero-optimized design. The rest of the body kit is the same as the ICE-powered version, with extensive use of carbon fiber and extended struts. However, there are a few changes that mark the zero state of this Magma.

The Crest’s grille is fully covered for better aerodynamics and the roof has solar panels that are said to offer a few extra miles of range between charges. At the rear, the ducktail spoiler is more subtle than the ICE version, and the quad pipes are absent from the diffuser and integrated F1-style lighting. Finally, the interior combines Alcantara and quilted leather upholstery with carbon fiber inserts finished in blue.

Genesis did not announce details of the full electric powertrain but said that the G80 EV Magma “exceeds the conventional ICE in power”. The twin-turbo V6 on the G80 Magma is said to produce around 500 hp, a figure that can easily be exceeded with a dual electric motor setup.

The performance-oriented sedan is equipped with an “advanced suspension system” specially tuned for extreme handling. The ride is reduced and the tracks are wider compared to the G80 Electrified. Stopping power is also improved with larger ventilated brakes.

When the Genesis G80 EV Magma was presented as a concept, SangYup Lee described it as a “core addition to the lineup”, hinting at a production version. We don’t know if the upcoming electric performance sedan will be limited to China or if it will reach other markets including Europe and North America. Note that the V6-powered Genesis G80 Magma is a limited production version, for the Middle East only.

In addition to the concept, Genesis also introduced a new G80 Electrified with a China-specific Vision Blue exterior shade, a 130 mm (51-inch) longer wheelbase, and a 27-inch OLED display from the recently facelifted G80. The lineup also included X Gran Berlinetta and the GV60 Magma concept, alongside the GV80 Coupe production car.
