Cherry factory in Spain: the main export base in the world

So Chery reveals that it has set a target of producing 150,000 vehicles a year by 2029 as part of a joint venture with Spanish company EV Motors.

Production will begin in late summer at a plant that Japanese manufacturer Nissan closed in 2021.

Chery will begin its industrial operations in Spain with the production of its Omoda 5 electric car.

Partial recovery of former Nissan factory workers

The Chinese manufacturer will hire 150 former Nissan employees, also said EV Motors CEO, Pedro Calef, during the presentation of the plant.

The two companies have committed to restoring up to 1,250 jobs lost with the closing of the Nissan plant.

As a reminder, Nissan’s main factory in Barcelona was sold in part to Spanish electric motorcycle manufacturer Silence and engineering groups QEV and EV Motors, which planned to turn it into an electric vehicle hub.

Last March, EV Motors acquired full control of the company. The company played an important role in the discussions with Chery as it would operate under the umbrella of the center. EV Motors also plans to offer its electric utility vehicles and vans under its Ebro brand, which could involve production and commercial deals with Chery.

Two other models from 2025, EV and fuel

The other two models of the car will be released from 2025, according to the manufacturer’s plans. The manager also pointed out that the plant will produce electric cars and heat engines.

Public support?

Public support from the Spanish state could help tip the balance for Catalonia.

Madrid wants to be “discreet” on the matter, with the Industry Ministry refusing last week to indicate whether Spain had given public aid to Chery.

Spain will open two calls for tenders this year to offer companies a total of 1.7 billion euros in loans and grants to increase production of electric vehicles. The procedure will be carried out under the so-called LOSS incentive scheme which uses EU Covid aid funds.
