Hamilton: The weekend race together will be “epic” / MotoGP

Since the takeover of MotoGP rights owner Dorna by Liberty Media, which already owns F1, there have been rumors: Could there be joint race weekends for the two series? Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton would prefer it.

If the competition authorities give the green light, Formula 1 and MotoGP will work in the future under the same marketing umbrella: US Liberty Media Group has taken over MotoGP rights owner Dorna.

Do four-wheelers and two-wheelers also run together on race weekends? Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton would be happy about the joint events of MotoGP and Formula 1.

Seven-time Formula 1 world champion: “It would be epic if we could have both series in one weekend.”

Carlos Ezpeleta, Chief Sports Officer of Dorna, at least did not ignore the weekend’s joint competition.

Hamilton: “Liberty has done a great job with Formula 1, its value is increasing. So I think they can do a good job with MotoGP as well. I find it exciting, I love MotoGP.”

And how: In 2019, Hamilton even swapped company cars with Valentino Rossi. Hamilton on a motorcycle, Rossi in a Formula 1 car.

The takeover of a majority stake in Dorna by Liberty Media still has to be approved by the competition authorities. If they give their approval, the acquisition should be completed within this year. So a strategic adjustment will not take place until 2025 at the earliest.

Sports marketing giants Liberty Media have now secured the next big series with Formula 1. Since Liberty Media took over the rights to Formula 1 in 2016, the series has gained popularity worldwide and especially in the USA. The number of spectators at the racetracks has increased. Almost every Grand Prix is currently setting a new attendance record compared to the previous year. The reason is the large population and the corresponding increase in capacity due to demand.

The effect of Freedom is particularly visible in the United States. No wonder – the American company had announced expansion, especially in the domestic market, as one of its goals. The Circuit of the Americas in Austin increased its Grand Prix audience from 268,000 to 432,000 between 2019 and 2023. In the United States, the number of TV viewers has also increased significantly.

System 1 owes its rise mainly to the Netflix series “Drive to Survive”. But also a successful social media strategy. Joint race weekends for these two series would fit perfectly into the marketing concept.
