A 43-year-old man has been banned from driving for 45 days and must pay a fine of 1,600 euros after driving his car into a pond at Decathlon after a night out at the Christmas market in Roeselare. He was brought home with a wet suit and it turned out that he still had 1.77 per mille in his blood.

The man had gone to the Christmas market with some friends on December 1, 2022. He parked his Land Rover in the Decathlon car park in Roeselare. According to his lawyer, the man made a mistake when he came out of the thick fog and drove the car backwards into the pond. “Water flooded into his car, my client had to crawl through the sunroof,” his lawyer said.

The man later went completely numb and his friend took him home. He later returned alone to the scene of the accident and informed the police. It was only two hours after the accident that the police came to the man’s house.

Due to the time that passed between the accident and the results, the lawyer tried to doubt whether his client was driving drunk or just started drinking after the accident. The judge disagreed with this.
