A small electric SUV … or a hot one!

Opel will launch the all-new Frontera. It’s no longer a question of a commuter but of a small electric car… or a hot SUV!

Opel has revealed the first official images of the all-new Frontera. This is actually intended to succeed the Crossland in the current range. The crossover will be available with a limited hybrid and electric powertrains. It’s enough to remind us of its relationship with the next Citroen C3 Aircross.

Frontera, a name we already know?

But perhaps it’s the name of the new style that interests us the most. Indeed, Opel and its British subsidiary Vauxhall first used the Frontera name between 1991 and 1998. At that time it was an SUV based on the Isuzu Wizard. The second generation model was introduced later and lived until 2004.
The third generation, which shares its platform and much of the bodywork with the future Citroën C3 Aircross, differs from the off-road nature of its predecessors. Must be a practical SUV meant for the city. Or close.
The special features of the Opel badge model basically remind us of the Mokka, another small SUV from the Blitz company. LED lights are featured along with the ‘Vizor’ shield, a feature common to the entire Opel range.
The model shown has a two-tone orange and black color that enhances its modern look. In short, there is no doubt that it is an Opel model, but considering the time.

What we already know

Opel designers have created the rear part especially interesting for the new Frontera. The C-pillars are perfectly placed and immediately catch the eye. Like the rear lights that are reminiscent of certain models from the Hyundai group.
The SUV is also highlighted with a black and gray fascia that adds to its rugged character. Like many other modern cars, The new-generation Frontera cabin adopts a minimalist design but seems to retain some classic buttons.
One of the highlights is the new digital instrument cluster and infotainment screen. Both are 10-inch screens. There is also a large three-spoke steering wheel, cloth seats and many black plastic components. A wireless charger as well as two USB ports on the front and two on the back are also required.
The new model will offer 460 liters, or even up to 1,600 liters once the rear seat is folded. A roof rack will also be offered as standard, in a nod to the first generation Frontera.

Frontera under all engines

The company did not say whether the Frontera will be offered with a three-row seating configuration, like the upcoming Citroën C3 Aircross. The Opel Frontera is one of the new models from Stellantis that will be based on the Smart Car architecture.
Note that this is an evolution of the CMP and eCMP platforms. So we know that the new Opel SUV will be available with a 48-volt, 100% electric hybrid powertrain.
Although the brand has not announced detailed information, we can easily guess that it will be shared with many other models from the Stellantis group.
Entry-level Frontera it is most likely to have a 1.2 liter turbocharged petrol engine. As for the electric version, it should have one motor mounted on the front axle.

We will learn more about the new Frontera in the coming days. The new Opel SUV is expected to be launched in the summer of 2024. The SUV will be positioned between the smaller Mokka and the Grandland which will also be updated this year. But later.
