All Electrical Transmissions – Start GV60: The first race from Korea

The fact that a car brand named Genesis exists is something that most people in Germany probably discovered last year after a tragic accident involving golfer Tiger Woods. He crashed in California with the Genesis GV80, the flagship SUV flag of the prestigious Korean Hyundai Group. The beginning has already been successful in the USA and Korea. Since its inception as an independent brand in 2015, Genesis has attracted more than half a million customers.

Last year in September, they dared to jump into the puddle, offering in Germany an elegant G80 sedan, GV80 full-size SUV, G70 Shooting Brake station wagon, G70 business sedan and GV70 mid-range SUV. However, none of the models mentioned are fully electronic. Genesis is now switching to the GV60, which will go on sale starting in June at a price starting at 56,370 euros.

To buy online only

This raises the question for interested characters: Where can I buy it? In Hyundai, in Kia, which also belongs to a Korean car company? none. So far there is only one “Start Studio” in Germany in Munich, where you can watch, touch and even import the GV60. Frankfurt and Berlin will be added soon. All non-residents should click on the online ordering process and, depending on the place of residence, receive the so-called GPA, Genesis Personal Assistant. This supervisor then handles everything and even brings a new car to the front door. Even when it comes to future maintenance, the client is not stressed. Genesis pulls up and brings the car. The replacement vehicle is provided free of charge for the duration of the service.

That all sounds promising and should arouse the curiosity of many customers. The same applies to the GV60 design. Genesis wants to emerge from other brands with a few amazing details, it talks about “athletic beauty”. These include the shield-shaped grille and the so-called quad LED lights. On the other hand, a small kink in the C column in the upper chrome zone attracts the eye. It is intended to refer to the volt of an electrical voltage unit (you must come to it first!). At the back, the rear lights are also a four-quad style.

Look at the glass ball

Genesis wants to meet its demands for payment, especially in the interior. The front part is flowing, creating a more spacious feeling. For panels, attention was paid to the most environmentally friendly materials possible. There is even an option to import sustainable leather made from polymer, plant-based sources such as maize. The digital pilot room is fully controlled by a slightly curved and very wide screen with two screens at the bottom. Fortunately, important switches such as air conditioners remain. Unnecessary search in any sub-menu on display is no longer necessary.

A good graphic – ideal for displays for friends or neighbors – is the Crystal Sphere, a cool gear selector switch on the center dashboard. As soon as you turn it on, the illuminated glass ball rotates upwards by 180 degrees and signifies: I am ready.

Kink in column C: For this, Genesis refers to the letter V for volts in GV60.

Performance like Porsche

Okay, we do too. Turn right to “D” and exit. The fact that the Beginning GV60 is one of the most powerful electric vehicles has already been demonstrated with its key technical data. The Sport Plus version we ran (price: from 70,010 euros) has an electric motor on each axle, each with an output of 160 kW. If you press the add button on the steering wheel, you have even another 40 kW available for ten seconds, making a total of 360 kW. According to the old unit, that is 490 hp. The Korean moves forward, but without a seam, smoothly and quietly. The start mentions only four seconds for a race from zero to 100 km / h. That’s the standard Porsche.

Sports Chassis

The chassis may be more comfortable. In an urban setting with all its sewage coverings and other terraces, the GV60 seems to be very complicated. Here, for example, his corporate brother, Ioniq 5, is the most fun to drive. The Genesis GV60 shares all the technology with it and the Kia EV6. All three are based on e-GMP architecture. It is designed for 800 volts, which allows for high charge currents (up to 240 kW and the original state) when you “add fuel” to the DC column and thus set a short charging time. With a filling rate of 80 percent battery capacity, based on ten percent, the GV60 driver should wait only 18 minutes under optimal conditions. This value is among the best in the industry.

After all, there is a battery with a capacity of 77.4 kWh on the floor. This size is important to ensure a wide range and therefore to travel smoothly. If you move the Start very carefully, you should be able to travel 466 km (WLTP standard) with one load. True, at least in the summer and without chasing the Autobahn – the top speed is at least 235 km / h – a radius of about 400 km should be possible. Our experimental utility was 22 kWh / 100 km, which would equate to a 350 km range.

Digital mirrors are an unnecessary gimmick

Overall, the Genesis GV60 made a good and professional impression. Processing and equipment are high, such as space (also on the back seats). At a height of 4.52 meters, the Korean crossover style remains the easiest for the city and is compact enough for a parking garage. The trunk holds 432 liters. Another part called “Frunk” is in the front under the cap. The charging cable fits well here.

We would only recommend against the Genesis GV60 from external digital mirrors. The reason: They offer a huge field of comment, but watching the show still seems untrue. It takes order to deal with it. The display space in the upper part of the door hinges also takes time to get used to. Good can be different.
