Fernando Alonso: Aston Martin ha, Mercedes noin / Formel 1

On April 11 it was announced that Fernando Alonso had signed a new two-year contract with Aston Martin until the end of 2026. This means that the issue of Hamilton’s successor at Mercedes is off the table.

Fernando Alonso remains in Formula 1, which is good news. But why does the 42-year-old Spaniard continue to rely on Aston Martin when he had all the transfer cards in hand? Where could he sign with Mercedes? As the successor of Lewis Hamilton.

The two-time Formula 1 champion and world endurance champion says: “Basically, not much had changed for me since the delivery of the new car in February. I told you then that I wanted to wait a few races to know my future. Because the program of The World Cup is getting bigger and bigger.”

“I quickly realized that my love for Formula 1 and my commitment to Aston Martin was not broken. But the first class requires a lot of time and energy.

“The sticking point was the weekend in Australia. That’s when I realized: I wanted to remain a Formula 1 driver. From there everything happened very quickly.”

“Basically, the team and the driver had the same goal here – I wanted to stay, the race team wanted to keep me. And if this mutual love is there, a solution can always be found. I’m happy that we continue together because I feel I’m at home here.”

“For me it’s also about trust. A lot has been achieved since we started working together a year and a half ago. I realized that we are still in the first part of our journey and I don’t want to leave this stage.”

Fernando Alonso will turn 45 in the 2026 GP season. Since the early 1970s and Jack Brabham, no one of this age has driven a Formula 1. Is this likely to continue? In the season of 2027 or later?

The Asturian smiles: “From today’s point of view, I cannot say when I will stop. At least not in 2025 and 2026. Part of my motivation for the coming years is that I’m excited about the new generation of racing cars in 2026 and about working with Honda.”
