Genesis: A performance version of the electric car is coming

Luxury brand Hyundai Genesis is introducing its new Magma performance brand and a series of concept cars. This includes the GV60 Magma Concept, Magma’s production-ready version of the GV60 electric car launched in 2021.

Genesis has yet to announce any technical data for the GV60 in Magma form. The GV60 is based on Hyundai Group’s E-GMP. So far, output is between 168 kW (229 hp) in the base model with rear-wheel drive and 360 kW (490) in the current top model with all-wheel drive. An 800 volt system with up to 240 kW charger can charge a 77.4 kWh battery from ten to 80 percent in 18 minutes.

The production version of the GV60 Magma Concept can be powered by the Ioniq 5 N from Hyundai (478 kW/650 hp and 84 kWh battery) or the EV6 GT from the Kia brand, also from Hyundai (430 kW/585 hp, 77.4 kWh ).

Genesis also offers Magma versions for other models. In addition to the GV60 Magma Concept, this was announced for three other vehicles: the SUV coupé GV80 Coupé Concept, the sedan G80 Magma Special (the G80 is also available in electric only) and the X Gran Berlinetta Concept. Still no technical data here either. Unlike the GV60 counterpart, no imminent market launch has been announced for the other Magma concepts.

In addition to the Magma models, Genesis has presented the Neolun Concept, a study of a large SUV with only an electric motor. The name “Neolun” is derived from the Greek word “neo” for moon and the Latin “luna” for moon. “Taken together, it embodies Genesis’ technological innovation that transcends traditional standards and sets the brand’s vision for the future,” it said.

There are no details about the technology and the Neolun Concept either. The show car’s second-row doors, which open at the rear like a sliding door, can be accessed from the final car. This type of door “has reached the level where it is now used in series cars,” says Genesis.

Commenting on the Magma sub-brand, Genesis Chief Creative Officer Luc Donckerwolke said: “Genesis Magma represents an exciting opportunity to push the boundaries of performance and luxury with new interpretations of high-performance vehicles, with the ultimate goal of promoting Genesis models exclusively. The brand will continue to unveil experimental concepts with careful attention to technological and aesthetic aspects.
