Illinois home intruder fatally stabbed during break-in attempt in Rockford

Rockford, Illinois was the scene of a fatal home intrusion on Sunday evening when an intruder was stabbed to death in an apparent attempt to break into a residence.

The Rockford Police Department reported that officers responded to a call from a resident of the residence at around 8:50 p.m. Sunday. Upon arriving, officers discovered the body of an unidentified individual with multiple stab wounds.

The homeowner, who has chosen to remain anonymous, stated that he was awoken by loud noises and proceeded to investigate the source of the disturbance. Upon further inspection, the homeowner encountered an intruder attempting to gain entry into the residence, at which point the homeowner wielded a kitchen knife and proceeded to stab the intruder multiple times.

The intruder was pronounced dead at the scene and the homeowner was taken into custody and transported to the Winnebago County Jail. The homeowner has been charged with first-degree murder and is awaiting further legal proceedings.

The Rockford Police Department has yet to release a statement on the matter, and the identity of the intruder has yet to be released pending the notification of next of kin.

The incident marks the second fatal home intrusion in Rockford this year, as the city continues to battle a rising crime rate.
