Maserati postpones the market launch of the electric Quattroporte

Originally scheduled for next year, Maserati announced that the launch of the Maserati Quattroporte may be delayed until 2028. It reports European Car News. Until now, the Quattroporte had to rely on the large STLA platform, which celebrated its debut with the Dodge Charger Daytona. With this platform, a range of almost 500 miles (805 km) and acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in two seconds is possible.

A new platform

But Maserati is no longer sure and is thinking of using another platform. For example the Maserati GranTurismo Folgore. Chief engineer Davide Danesin explains to Motor vehiclethat this can be applied to the Quattroporte. He mentions two advantages. On the one hand, better agility compared to the large STLA platform, and on the other hand, the seating position. It is more comparable to that of a combustion sports car. The reason for these advantages is the battery arrangement of the GranTurismo.

The cells are arranged in a T shape across the spine of the car. This means that the front seats are placed next to the battery and not on top of the battery. This reduces the seating space compared to a conventional electric car. In addition, this arrangement is intended to reduce the body, says Danesin. He also insists that the initial performance of the Quattroporte was insufficient and had a negative impact on the range.

Perfection instead of a quick market launch

Danesin explains: “The Quattroporte is an important issue for Maserati. It must be the best in everything – style, design, performance. There will also be many improvements in the development of electricity in the future.” In addition to the range, weight played an important role in the decision to postpone the launch of the Quattroporte “Modern electric cars are getting heavier and we must stop this trend,” emphasizes Danesin.

The postponement of the launch of the Quattroporte means Maserati’s next electric car will be the MC20 Folgore, due in 2025. It will be followed in 2027 by a large luxury SUV that will replace the Levante. Maserati has already announced that the company plans to completely convert its product range to electric vehicles in 2028.
