The Mazda6 could be offered as an electric car

Mazda may offer its mid-range Mazda6 in an electric version in the future. This is recommended by trademark registration in Europe.

Gate Automatic manual reports two applications from a Japanese manufacturer to the European Union Intellectual Property Office related to “cars and parts thereof; Electric vehicles and parts thereof”. The registration included the word mark “Mazda 6e” and the “6e” logo.

The Mazda6 is currently available as a sedan and station wagon only with gasoline engines. The brand’s only electric car so far is the MX-30, which is now also available with an additional petrol engine as a power generator for the wider range. In October, Mazda presented a compact sports car concept: the Iconic SP is based on an electric drive architecture and also uses a Wankel engine for greater flexibility.

Mazda is moving slower than other manufacturers when it comes to electric vehicles. Although the Japanese want to move forward with their electrification, electric cars will not be a priority at this time.

The CEO puts the brakes on the power supply

At the end of 2022, the company announced that it will invest billions in its electricity distribution. The range should be fully electric by 2030. However, CEO Masahiro Moro plans to slow the adoption of electric vehicles.

“One of the biggest problems for us is the uncertain demand,” Moro said at the end of 2023. “In the current market, the speed of electrification, especially in battery electric vehicles, is not that fast. So maybe we will start climbing more slowly .” This applies less to the schedule than to the number of cars produced. “Between now and 2030 is the time to distribute electricity – we must go through this difficult journey,” said Moro. “We have to address the needs and wants of consumers. At the moment the customer is looking for alternative solutions – beyond battery electric cars.”

According to the CEO, Mazda wants to have seven or eight electric cars by 2030. These will run on a new scalable platform. The first Design model, which is only available as an electric car, is scheduled to celebrate its debut between 2025 and 2027. According to reports, the version will focus on crossovers and is unlikely to include small or compact cars.

Mazda is working on two types of electric cars: models built from the ground up as electric cars and cars based on existing architecture that can also carry combustion and hybrid drives. The latter may include the next generation Mazda6, for which the manufacturer is planning at least an electric version according to the latest trademark registration.
