Mazda CX-70 costs more than CX-90

Mazda has just announced Canadian prices for its new product CX-70 2025, which will go on sale in the spring. Remember, this is a mid-size SUV with the same engine CX-90, but one row of seats down. So we expected to have a low cost of entry but, surprisingly, not so.

Below the range is the CX-70 GS-L at $49,750 (plus $2,195 freight and PDI). That’s $450 more than the equivalent CX-90. And the latter even offers a base GS version for $45,900, something the CX-70 lacks.

Standard equipment includes a turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six engine that produces 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque on regular gasoline. There are also unique 19-inch wheels in a dark gray finish, full LED lighting, black leatherette seats with 10 power adjustments for the driver, a 10.25-inch multimedia screen and a 7-inch digital instrument cluster. Let’s not forget the many accessories i-Activsense driving aids.

Next comes the $54,350 CX-70 GT, which is unique with 21-inch wheels finished in black metallic, a hands-free power liftgate, a sunroof, a head-up display, a 12-speaker Bose audio system plus and wireless. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The seats are made of genuine leather and those in the rear seats are heated. In terms of safety, a 360-degree camera system and trailer hitch view are added, but there are many other features as well.

By opting for the CX-70 GT-P for $58,300, engine power increases to 340 horsepower and torque to 369 lb-ft… provided you use premium gasoline. It lets you tow up to 5,000 pounds, by the way. This version also adds red or black Nappa leather and ventilated front seats with memory space for the driver. Lane Keep Assist controls the steering wheel to avoid collisions, while the system can detect an impaired driver and stop the car if it doesn’t respond to alerts.

As for the CX-70 Signature, which offers the height of luxury and safety at a price of $ 62,300, its Nappa leather seats have a unique beige color and the dashboard is decorated with suede. The digital instrument and central screen are 12.3 inches each. More driving aids are on the menu, including a system that prevents a secondary collision after a rear impact.

What about a combination of plugins?

There are two versions of the CX-70 PHEV starting at GS-L at $58,750. Note that the same PHEV CX-90 starts at $59,950, but you can also get one (GS) from just $54,900, which is not the case with the two-row model.

The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and electric motor together produce 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque (first gasoline). With a 17.8 kWh battery, the electric range increases to 42 km, the same as the CX-90 PHEV. An EV drive mode is also included. Towing capacity is limited to 3,500 lbs.

Equipment is identical to the non-hybrid CX-70 GS-L except for a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

Finally, for $63,350, the CX-70 PHEV GT adds red or black Nappa leather, a memory driver’s seat, heated rear seats, a hands-free liftgate, a sunroof and more.

Both versions of the CX-70 PHEV are eligible for a government subsidy of $2,500 and another of $5,000 from the Quebec government. Don’t miss our first on-road contact with the 2025 Mazda CX-70 in the coming weeks!
