This supercar brand will help BMW improve its EVs

With the upcoming Neue Klasse, BMW wants to set the tone as one of the leading EV manufacturers. The Germans even called for the help of Rimac – the Croatian manufacturer of electric supercar Nevera.

Rimac will help BMW develop, innovate and produce batteries and related technologies for the next generation of electric BMWs, the Munich brand announced. As part of the agreement, a large part of Rimac’s campus – a factory and development area near Zagreb – will be equipped to facilitate the development and supply of battery packs to BMW.

BMW takes electric plans seriously

The agreement shows how serious BMW is with its electrification plans. The German brand wants to release 6 new electric models by 2026, all considering Neue Classe concept car. The first model of this new series will be an electric SUV that will replace the current BMW iX3. There are also 5 other models – including an electric one BMW 3 series – in the pipe.

BMW wants the EV share of its sales to gradually increase. Last year, 16.7 percent of all BMWs sold worldwide were EVs, this year the brand aims for 20 percent. And if everything goes according to plan, the EV share will grow to 25 percent by 2025. A year later, this should increase to percent 33, in part due to 6 new EV models. By the end of this decade, half of sales should be fully electric.

BMW EV improvements

To achieve all this, BMW wants to make electric driving more attractive through innovation. BMW is using its latest electric powertrain for the Neue Klasse. The brand itself talks about the sixth generation of BMW eDrive technology. This uses new, cylindrical battery cells with 20 percent higher energy density.

The board system works with 800 volts, which means that fast charging is very fast. BMW even promises a driving range of 300 km in just 10 minutes. It’s still enough for a bathroom break, but it doesn’t make much of a difference.

You can also go 30 percent more on a full battery. Power consumption is kept to a minimum, thanks to low air resistance, special EV tires and a modified suspension system. It is very likely that BMW will come up with many EV innovations by 2026 and more in the future through the partnership with Rimac.
