Volkswagen Group China has presented a prototype of a vertical takeoff drone. Four passengers can sit in the V.MO and fly electric to their destination.
In the summer months, vacation spots call louder, but when you’re driving to the airport or train station, traffic jams often make travelers impatient. In such situations, not a few people have dreamed of just riding a flying object and being able to fly over the traffic. Volkswagen in China has now presented a solution as an example. Inside of V.MO is a vertical takeoff drone and a room for four people.
Test flights with a VW drone until 2023
According to the VW Group, the concept is based on current solutions for autonomous driving and depends on the car’s battery. However, with a length of 11.2 meters and a wingspan of 10.6 meters, the V.MO is much larger than, for example, the VW Passat. Eight rotors take care of vertical flight, while two rotors are dedicated to propulsion. Volkswagen intends to conduct the first flight tests in China early this year, before test flights are completed by the end of summer 2023. In its final version, the drone should be able to transport four passengers plus cargo up to 200 km per battery charge. If it is about Dr. Stephan Wöllenstein, CEO of Volkswagen Group China, then this drone should be the best product for customers in China and initially to transport VIPs.
It is not yet clear whether such a drone will also be produced outside of China. In any case, VW would like to respond to the special needs of Chinese customers and position itself there as a premium brand. In China, indoor space is considered very important, like this one Audi Urbansphere Concept from the VW Group exhibition; a city car with an exterior length of 5.40 meters that was developed specifically for China. The Middle Kingdom is an important sales market for Europe’s biggest car company, with Audi aiming to be a more luxury brand and VW a premium brand.
