Stefano Manzi (25) knew: “It’s easy to make mistakes” / Supersport World Cup

After a chaotic Supersport meeting in Assen, the top four in the overall standings are separated by just two championship points. Kate Yamaha ten rider Stefano Manzi missed the chance to win the third race of the season.

Of the contenders for the 2024 Supersport World Championship title, only Adrian Huertas (Aruba.it Ducati) had a smooth weekend in Assen. The Spaniard won the first race and came second in the second race, going from 5th to 1st overall – because everyone else made a mistake in at least one race. Yari Montella (Barni Ducati) missed the first race due to a technical problem. Marcel Schrötter (MV Agusta) generally did not cope well with the adverse conditions at the TT Circuit. And Stefano Manzi (Yamaha) made a complete mistake in the second race – of all places at the home race of his Dutch team Ten Kate Racing.

Manzi could have finished second on Saturday as the third major event of the season and would have been the World Championship leader with a good lead. But the VR46 pilot made the lonely decision to stay on the flooded runway. The Italian was hoping for a dry track, but on lap 5 the 25-year-old from Rimini also took wet tyres. In 21st place, the Yamaha rider avoided being squeezed by teammate Glenn van Straalen, who took his first Supersport win.

“It was a good first race and we have to be happy with our position. It dried up so slowly that we struggled in the third sector halfway through the race. I was leading the group of riders by a bit, but when Adrian caught me he was faster. We made a good decision, but it’s easy to make mistakes,” Manzi said on Saturday. “On Sunday it was very difficult to assess the situation. The whole weekend changed a lot. It’s a shame that we didn’t score today and I regret that too, but it is what it is. I would like to congratulate Glenn and the team on their home win. We will come back strong in Misano.”

Because Manzi completed the pit stop so quickly, he also received a time penalty of 11.820 seconds!
